Pediatric Physiotherapy Awareness Camp
Dealing with people in our society,we come across many children who are with special needs. Needs, which if left unattended can develop into severe disabilities. This requirement made us focus on spreading awareness about Pediatric physiotherapy. In the month of January after the winter break of our students were over, our Neurology specialized faculty Dr. Priyadarshani Bhat came up with this idea. We immediately approached our administration and they gave us a green signal for organizing this camp in the college premises. We went and met the RWA of all the nearby societies, our students distributed pamphlets outside their main gates, so that we can have maximum mass participation.
We also invited invited our patients who visited with their children with special needs to our ongoing physiotherapy clinic in the college campus as models. Pediatric physiotherapy is a specializing branch of Master in Physiotherapy course which is highly in demand these days. Commonly, it is addressed as physiotherapy for children with special needs. Working with children is always exciting and enriching but at the same time challenging too.
This course for Physiotherapy trains therapists who are called Pediatric physiotherapists, who are experts in child development, particularly in relation to the development of movement. Movement is a very important aspect of growth for babies and children. Movement allows babies and children to explore their bodies, how they work, as well understand their environment and all the things in their world as being able to move easily and successfully is essential for learning and growing. Pediatric physiotherapist does the assessment, identification, diagnosis and treatment of child with development and movement difficulties. Aim of the treatment is to optimize health, well-being and abilities of each child to enable them to move and participate in everyday activities like, playing, learning, going to school, and being part of a family and community.
However, Physiotherapists entering this field will have to adapt the techniques that they have learnt to the ever changing needs of a growing child. At the same time they should possess a very important quality of PATIENCE without which dealing with this category of clients is next to impossible. Therefore,do keep this key point in mind if anybody plans to pursue education in this stream.
The types of movement disorders or movement difficulties pediatric physiotherapists can help with includes:
Neurological conditions like Cerebral palsy, Spina bifida, delay in developmental milestones like babies who are late to learn to learn to hold the neck erect, sit, crawl or walk.

TYPES OF PEDIATRIC PHYSIOTHERAPY
The aim of the pediatric physiotherapist is to provide a program that the client will enjoy, while encouraging them to participate and become independent. Advice on activities and stretches offered by the physiotherapist can assist in maintaining full range of movement and prevention of contracture and reaching the stage of disability from impairment. We demonstrated various stretching exercises, Movement therapies, Massage techniques for neonates, Breathing exercises and forced expiratory maneuverss for loosening of secretions etc. our students also simulated the problems in front of participants. The event was a huge success as it also brought into highlight many Learning disabilities which were ignored by many parents. with Psychological counselling and proper guidance all these problems can be prevented from escalation.
Training for this program can be achieved from various colleges for physiotherapy in India and abroad under any recognised university. Generally this MPT course is a two year post graduate course enabling a physiotherapist in the category of handling children particularly.
